Interested readers will enjoy this look at the Romney Massachusetts health care

A look at what health care reform did and did not accomplish is Massachusetts.

law as it brings a helpful understanding of what one state has accomplished (and left undone) under the Romney initiative.  The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation reports in this brief a rapid drop in the number of uninsured residents living within that state even during a period of continued rise in the number of uninsured in the nation.

At the same time, the Romney plan does not address the rising cost of health care, which continues to be a problem in that state, in South Carolina, and in the Lake Marion area.  Here is the briefing, please.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is a tax exempt non-partisan group which studies health care issues.

The state’s unemployment rate for April

shows a slight improvement from 8.9 percent to 8.8, trending as the nation’s improvement from 8.2 to 8.1.  Last year at this time the state average was 10.4 and the national average 9.1.  In addition to some finding work, the numbers also reflect workers leaving the work force.

The Lake Marion area continues to report a poorer employment climate than the state and nation.  Orangeburg’s April rate is unchanged from the 12.1 reported in March of this year, but is down from the 12.9 reported for April of 2011.

Clarendon County has the area’s poorest April showing with 13.4 percent unemployed from  the 13.0 March number, though this is better than the 14.6 rate recorded in April of last year.

Calhoun remains the best of the area with an April rate of 9.8, which is up from 9.1 in March.  The April of 2011 rate was 10.9.

The best counties in the state for April are Lexington at 6.6, Greenville at 6.7, and Dorchester at 6.9.

The state’s poorest showings are Marion’s 16.8, Marlboro’s 15.7, and Allendale’s 15.5.  However, their rates last year were 19.1, 17.3, and 16.4 respectively and so they also reflect improvement.  Then our three country lake area is closer to the worst than to the best.  Here are all of the numbers, please.

Did that cork just bobble there?

South Carolina Realtors are reporting a jiggle in the housing market, though not enough to call it a fish.

In the first four months of 2010, 15,199 homes sales closed while in 2011 that number dropped to 14,304.  This past April the number returned a little to 14,994.

In 2010 the median sales price was $145,100 and that number fell to $140,000 last year and this year it bumped up to $144,500.

And the market has cleared a bit.  At this time in 2010 there were 62,505 houses on the market.  Last year that fell to 59,115 and that decline has continued to 49,593 this year.

Hotter and louder

Interested readers might find helpful a South Carolina health facts profile produced by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.  There is not much to brag about as the state lags the national average in many important and expensive categories.

Fewer people can pay for more needed and more expensive services and the check is not in the mail.

At Lake Marion the numbers are even hotter and louder because the native population has a higher than average poverty rate and is less able to pay for health care, while incoming retirees need more services that are more expensive, all while Medicaid and Medicare are reducing reimbursements to area health care providers.

Jobs creation would be helpful.  Small business growth results in a growing of wealth, as well as a spreading of that wealth.  It is fair to draw a direct line between the absence of a systemic jobs creation discipline in the area’s political halls and the local health care crunch that is growing around us.

Are schools or diet better for

our pursuit of good health.  A Stanford School of Medicine study suggests that racial disparity in health is less attributable to life behavior decisions than to early life advantages of income and education.  Where blacks and whites share similar educational and income opportunities health disparity is negligible.

Dr. Anthony Iton is quoted, “The difference between race and racism.  Race doesn’t matter, racism does matter because it constrains people’s access to … high educational attainment, high income, high employment.”

So fundamental to the potential for good health is this early experience, that it contributes more to the later life good health result than, say, smoking.  Here is the report.
